The job of a flight attendant begins with a flight briefing. While flight briefing, the pilot of the aircraft provides the attendants with information about the weather conditions, evacuation procedures, and flight. Before passengers board the plane, attendants check the cabin’s cleanliness, emergency equipment, beverage, and food supplies. Flight attendant’s primary duty is the safety of the passengers. To ensure passenger safety, flight attendants make sure passengers secure their seat belts, give instructions on safety equipment, and help them stow their carry-on items. According to the BLS, the minimum education qualification for a flight attendant is a high school diploma. Few airlines prefer applicants with a college education. Degree programs that improve an aspiring flight attendant’s resume include public relations, hospitality, or communications. Airlines offer training for new recruits. In 2019, the biggest employer of flight attendants was scheduled air transportation, with more than 97 percent of the 119,300 positions. Salaries ran a mean of $56,830 per annum. The state with the highest employment for flight attendants in 2019 was California, with almost fifteen percent of the positions. The average yearly pay in that state was $54,580. New York held the next highest number of jobs, with nearly twelve percent of the posts. The mean annual pay in the state was $50,410 per annum. The best payment was in Washington at a mean $78,440 per annum, followed by Massachusetts at a mean $63,470 per annum and Indiana.
The BLS estimated that between 2018 and 2028, the employment of flight attendants would see a two percent increase. There is fierce competition for open positions because there are often too many applicants and few open positions available. The BLS added that positions would open up as flight attendants move into different careers or retire. In May 2019, the average annual pay for flight attendants of scheduled air transportation was $56,000, the BLS reported.
